Opportunity: Automation Engineering Consultant, Permission Slip

Permission Slip is a mobile application which allows users to exercise their data privacy rights by requesting that companies delete or stop selling their data. Companies that we send these data rights requests to each follow their own process for receiving and actioning the requests. As part of delivering these requests at scale, we are exploring automation opportunities and are looking for a software developer with strong automation experience to help us instrument our quickly evolving automation work stream. Your work will go a long way to helping us fight for consumer privacy.

This consulting position will span 2-3 months – depending on date of hire – with potential to extend. This is a remote opportunity, with the option for hybrid work for candidates located near Consumer Reports offices in New York or Washington, D.C.

What You Will Do:

  • Work with Permission Slip’s tech lead and engineering leadership across Consumer Reports’ Innovation Lab to identify and instrument automation opportunities.
  • Write Playwright scripts to support sending data rights requests to a wide range of consumer facing companies and data brokers.
  • Support development and deployment of hosting and scheduling infrastructure for automation scripts.
  • Support integration of new automation workflows into Permission Slip’s existing infrastructure.
  • Prioritize privacy-by-design principles in your approach.

About You:

  • You have experience with Django, the framework for Permission Slip’s backend.
  • You have experience with test automation – ideally with Playwright.
  • You have knowledge or curiosity about privacy, data rights, consumer protection, or public interest technology.

If this sounds like you, drop a note and your resume to innovationlab@cr.consumer.org. In your email, let us know what you think of Permission Slip and why you believe you’d be a good fit for this consulting assignment.
